“Good morning, Chris. I’m looking for a watch that’s rugged and has excellent GPS, navigation, and long battery life. You must sell Amazfit for a reason. What would be the best option, and could you help me with this?” Chris from Trailrunning Europe sprang into action. Not long after, I had the Amazfit T-Rex 3 in hand for testing—one week before its official launch on September 6 and right before my adventure in the Spanish Pyrenees.

The Amazfit T-Rex 3 is a true powerhouse in the world of rugged smartwatches. As the successor to its successful predecessors, this third-generation model raises the bar for both outdoor adventurers and sports enthusiasts, according to Amazfit. This review will dive deeper into the features, performance, and user experience with the T-Rex 3 to answer one central question: Is this the ultimate watch for the adventurer in you?

Navigating at High Altitude in Thick Fog

The Basque Country—the starting point of my Pyrenees adventure—is known for rain and dense clouds drifting in from the sea, often lingering for long periods. At higher altitudes, visibility can be so low that you can’t see your hand in front of you, let alone the trail markers.

This is where I truly appreciated the T-Rex 3’s navigation skills, and I can say I was pleasantly surprised. Effortlessly, I navigated mountain ridges and fog-covered landscapes, following the pre-loaded, color-detailed map with no GPS hiccups. For me, this key feature of an adventure watch performed flawlessly—a big plus!

Amazfit has designed the T-Rex 3 to be intuitive, featuring both a touchscreen and four physical buttons for easy operation. This is especially useful for outdoor sports enthusiasts who may not always have their hands free.

Ruggedness and Design of the Amazfit T-Rex 3

At first glance, the Amazfit T-Rex 3’s rugged, military aesthetic immediately inspires confidence in its durability. Built to withstand extreme conditions, it meets necessary military standards. Whether you’re hiking in the heat, climbing a mountain, or diving into the water, the T-Rex 3 keeps going. The robust polycarbonate and metal casing provides strength while being surprisingly lightweight, making it comfortable for long periods of wear. I’ve been wearing it almost non-stop.

According to Amazfit, the T-Rex 3 is water-resistant up to 100 meters, making it ideal for swimmers, divers, and water sports enthusiasts. It also comes in different colours and finishes, so you can find a style that suits you.

Display and Ease of Use

One of the major upgrades in the T-Rex 3 is its 1.5-inch AMOLED display, which offers vibrant colours and excellent brightness, even in direct sunlight. With a resolution of 454 x 454 pixels, it delivers sharp visuals, while Gorilla Glass provides extra protection against scratches and impacts. The bright, always-on display makes it easy to read information without needing to constantly activate the watch. You can also control this always-on feature with wrist gestures.

Health and Sports Tracking

The Amazfit T-Rex 3 includes extensive sports and health tracking features, supporting over 170 sports modes, such as running, cycling, swimming, skiing, and even mountain climbing. With a built-in GPS (supporting six satellite systems) and a compass, you can accurately track your location and routes even in remote locations.

For health monitoring, the T-Rex 3 offers 24/7 heart rate monitoring, SpO2 (blood oxygen level) tracking, sleep tracking, and stress monitoring. According to Amazfit, the accuracy of these measurements has significantly improved compared to previous models. Through the Zepp app, the watch provides you with detailed insights, allowing you to track your progress and view analysis.

Battery Life

One of the most impressive aspects—and for me, along with navigation, one of the most important—is the T-Rex 3’s battery life. With a 700 mAh battery, it can last up to 27 days with normal use and up to 13 days with intensive use. Even with heavy GPS usage, the battery lasts around 42 hours. This long battery life makes the T-Rex 3 a great companion for multi-day adventures where charging may be limited, which I often encounter when exploring the mountains.

Smart Features

While the Amazfit T-Rex 3 is primarily aimed at outdoor enthusiasts, it also includes some smart features you’d expect from a modern smartwatch. You can receive notifications from your smartphone and control your music. Additionally, it includes handy features like a weather app, stopwatch, and alarm, which I didn’t test but you can try out for yourself.

Zepp App: The Heart of the T-Rex 3

With the Zepp app—the beating heart of your watch—you can customize the Amazfit T-Rex 3. The app is user-friendly and offers many options. You can choose your watch face, download and install extra user functions, view your performance, load routes and maps, chat with the Zepp coach, and adjust many settings to suit your needs, putting full control in your hands.
